Janet Lee

Janet Lee learned that she has great love for singing before she learned how to read. She joined the Operafest Children Choir in 1997 as one of the oldest 'kids' and gained confidence with these all-important toddler steps in singing and performing. Janet's two-year stint with the lively group included being part of the musical ensemble for Oliver!; and as Madam Fong in Flower Drum Song. Other choral experiences with the group include numerous performances locally and outside Malaysia, also in collaborations with other choral groups such as the Trinity Boys Choir and Hong Kong Youth Choir.

Janet joined the Selangor Philharmonic Society in 2000 for the massive production of Carl Off’s Carmina Burana with highly regarded Roland Peelman as conductor. She was featured as a guest performer in the KL Young Singers acclaimed debut concert in September 2001 and again in their second concert Music Brings Us Together in December 2002. She also sang at AWAM (All Women’s Action Society)’s fund-raising performance, Crescendo at No Black Tie (2003).

Janet’s operatic involvement includes Lyric Opera Malaysia’s Tosca, conducted by Sydney’s Vladimir Kamirski (July 2003); and Penang Arts Council’s Turandot, conducted by Britain’s Jeremy Silver (December 2003).

She emerged as the 3rd runner-up at the district level 2004’s 30th National Art Song Singing Competition, which qualified her as a Selangor representative at the nationwide Finals.

As a versatile singer, Janet has also been a voice talent for numerous radio and TV jingles; she swoons both corporate and public audience with her jazz and blues repertoire at private gigs; she occasionally sings back-up vocals for singer Deanna Yusof.

2004 Lyric Opera Malaysia’s August production of The Merry Widow marks Janet’s first principal role in an operetta, singing the role of Sylviane. Janet undertakes voice lessons with the well-respected baritone, Cha Seng Tiang; she has attended master class by Loh Siew Tuan, renowned singer-pedagogue.
