Operafest Children's Choir performs to aid animal shelter

THE lobby of Hilton Petaling Jaya was transformed into a musical stage as 20 children from Operafest Children's Choir sang Christmas tunes.

Holding hands, they sang for almost 30 minutes to raise funds for the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Selangor.

Aged seven to 17, they children sang Al Shlosha (Hebrew hymn), March of the Kings, Medley of Carols, A Very Merry Christmas to All of You, You'll Never Walk Alone, May the Good Lord Bless, among others.

Conductor Kam Sun-Yoke said the event was to raise funds for abused and abandoned animals.

"It creates awareness and promotes love for animals especially among children," she said.

A store called "Love Needs No Pedigree" has been set up at the hotel's lobby until Jan 6, selling souvenirs, dogs and cats plush toys, and SPCA T-shirts for adults and children.

Guests can also view pictures of dogs and cats available for adoption.

The Operafest Children's Choir was formed in 1986 by Kam and has since performed in the US, Spain, Greece, Macedonia, Australia, Singapore, Argentina and India.

The group is the first Malaysian children's choir group to win third place in the International Koor festival in Arnhem, Holland. It also has the distinction of being the only children's choir to sing with the Vienna Boy's Choir.
